World-renowned football commentator, John Motson, has today given his backing to new charity, Bowel Research UK, as part of a bid to drive awareness and support for bowel research. The call coincides with the launch of the Large and Small Bowel Appeal from the charity, which is asking people to get behind the cause by donating and fundraising for bowel research.

The video, in which John Motson introduces the charity while intimately describing his own battles and experiences with bowel cancer, pleads with people to recognise the importance of bowel research. John highlights the crucial advances made in research that have allowed survival rates of bowel cancer to increase by 44% in the last 50 years. Championing the importance of bowel research, John states that it is crucial to “finding out what we can about why people get bowel cancer and how it should be treated”. He also urges anyone who suspects something to be wrong to “get it checked out” after being diagnosed himself through a routine check.

John Motson’s plea comes as Bowel Research UK launch a brand-new fundraising campaign, the Large and Small Bowel Appeal. Building on his message, the ambitious campaign seeks to further the charity’s mission of funding £1million of research over the next 12-18 months. With £600,000 already raised, the Appeal is asking for people to donate or fundraise to help achieve this target so that this vital and life-saving research can continue.

Bowel Research UK CEO, Rebecca Porta, says:

“More than 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year in the UK, and an increasing number are impacted by life-changing bowel conditions, making the work of Bowel Research UK more critical than ever. We are delighted to receive the backing of such a high-profile figure as John Motson who articulates exactly why our patient-driven research can help deliver much-needed improvements in diagnosis, treatment and care.”
